Transcript:
Welcome to the Merced County Dial a Story. The story you will be listening to today is The Princess and the Frog, performed for you by the Merced library theater players.
SCENE 1 – IN THE FOREST
(The Princess enters, singing and playing with a golden ball)
PRINCESS: La la la, it’s such a beautiful day! The sun is out, the birds are singing, and I have my beautiful silver ball that my father gave me to play with. Huh, that’s weird. Is that a well, I’ve never seen it before. It must go down for miles and miles (leans over and drops ball) Oh noooo, I dropped my ball! What do I do? (crying)
FROG: (sticks head up from behind well) Hello princess!
PRINCESS: Eeek, an ugly frog! You just stay over there. (keeping distance)
Frog: Why are you so sad?
PRINCESS: w I was looking at the well and I accidentally dropped my ball down there and it’s so deep I can’t get it back. I don’t know what to do. If I could get it back I would give everything that I have. I would give – my necklace, my bracelet, or even the crown that I’m wearing.
FROG: Princess, I can find your ball. But what would I do with jewelry and a crown?
PRINCESS: (angry) I don’t know; sell them for flies or something?
FROG: ribbit. If it will make you happy, I’ll get your silver ball.
PRINCESS: (surprised) Yes! It would make me so happy! You’ll really do that for me?
FROG: Ribbit. Yes, but only if you promise you will let me come live at the castle.
PRINCESS: Um…say what now?
FROG: And let me be your friend.
PRINCESS: Let you…be MY friend?
FROG: And let me eat at your table.
PRINCESS: Let you eat at our table?
FROG: And let me sleep on your pillow.
PRINCESS: Yes yes yes, I promise all of that, as long as you get my ball back. (to the audience) What is this frog even talking about? He just lives out here with the other frogs all day, croaking and catching flies. He can’t be someone’s friend.
FROG: Very well, you’ll get your ball back. (disappears behind the well).
PRINCESS: (looking down inside well) Yes! Wow it’s so dark down there. I can´t even see him, where did he go. He’d better not have stolen my ball. (she jumps back as the frog appears with the ball). Yes! You found it! (she grabs the ball and runs off stage laughing happily).
FROG: Princess, princess, oh princess wait! What about your promise? (he shakes his head, and jumps back behind the well).
SCENE 2 – IN THE CASTLE DINING HALL
(The Princess and King are eating dinner)
KING: Daughter, ever since I gave you that silver ball you have been rushing through dinner.
PRINCESS: I just can’t wait to play with it outside, Father. It´s my favorite toy. (There is a knock at the door). Who could that be?
FROG: (from off stage) Princess, princess, open the door please!
PRINCESS: (opens and closes the door quickly) Oh no, it´s the frog!
KING: Who is it at the door?
PRINCESS: (crying) It’s just this gross frog. Yesterday, when I was playing with my ball, I dropped it in a well. And because I was sad, this frog promised to get it back to me. But in order to get it back, I kind of maybe promised that he could be my friend and come live in the castle. But I never thought he would actually leave his pond. So now he’s here, and he wants to come in and live in the castle.
FROG: (knocks at the door) Princess, Princess, open the door! You promised!
KING: Well, you gave him your word, and a promise is a promise. Let the frog in.
PRINCESS: Ugh, FINE. (open the door) Come in, frog.
FROG: Thank you, Princess. I’m very hungry. You said I could eat from your plate. (he hops to the table and begins to eat). Mmm this is delicious. Now I’m very full and tired. Let me sleep on your pillow.
PRINCESS: Do I HAVE to? (looking at King)
KING: Well, the frog helped you when you needed it most. And you promised.
PRINCESS: (sighs) All right fine. Come on frog let’s go upstairs. (As she walks toward the frog, the curtain falls)
SCENE 3 – IN THE CASTLE DINING HALL.
(The Princess and the King are eating dinner)
KING: Daughter, why aren’t you eating?
PRINCESS: I´m not hungry.
KING: Maybe a joke will cheer you up. Why do frogs want to be rappers? Because they’re really into hip hop. Ha ha ha.
PRINCESS: (rolls her eyes) Ha. Ha.
KING: You need to eat daughter dearest. You haven’t been hungry for past three days.
PRINCESS: No, because that gross frog keeps coming back. Every time he comes here and says (imitates the frog´s voice): Princess, Princess, open the door!
KING: Well you gave him your word.
PRINCESS: I know, but when he comes here and eats from my plate, he always gets food everywhere! And then when I have to pick him up and take him to go sleep on my pillow, he’s always slimy. I’m always so glad when he’s gone in the morning.
FROG: (knocks at door) Princess, Princess, open the door!
PRINCESS: Ugh. He’s here AGAIN.
KING: You promised him, go open the door.
PRINCESS: (opens door and sees a prince) Um, hi, who are you? You look familiar…
PRINCE: (enters room) It’s me, the frog! I’m a prince. A wicked witch put a spell on me. To break the curse, I needed to find a princess who would let me spend three nights in her castle and be my friend. Thank you for keeping your promise and helping me turn back into a prince!
PRINCESS: You’re welcome! I’m so glad you’re not a frog anymore! I guess appearances can be deceptive. Now I have a friend! Do you want to go play ball in the forest?
PRINCE: I would love to play with you and your ball. Let’s go!
(both skip off)
